The Passing of a PWL Legend

Posted by Neil Glaves on May 22, 2012 at 2:40 AM Comments comments (0)

Tributes have been paid to disco star Donna Summer, who has died aged 63.

It is believed the American singer, best known for hits including I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby, had been fighting cancer.

A family statement said: "Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith. While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."

Kylie Minogue and Pete Waterman are among those who have paid tribute.

Producer Quincy Jones paid tribute on Twitter, writing: "Rest in Peace dear Donna Summer. Your voice was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade." Kylie described her as "one of my earliest musical inspirations".

Record producer Pete Waterman, who worked with Summer in the 1980s, said his abiding memory was of "a lovely person". He said: "Whenever you were with her she made you feel so special. She had all the talent but she gave you all the credit. She was not a diva in any shape or form."

We too share the sad loss of such a great performer a true legend of pop and a brave lady. Her 1989 PWL produced album "Another Time and Place" is one of the all time classic albums, she truly was a one off.

The big line-up

JULY 11th 2012 – HYDE PARK

And here is who you can catch at this massive gig...

Rick Astley, Steps, Jason Donovan, Bananarama, Dead or Alive, Pepsi and Shirlie, Princess, Sinitta, Hazell Dean, Sonia, Sybil, 2 Unlimited, Lonnie Gordon, Brother Beyond - plus more acts to be announced!

There will also be a very special duet, which has been 23 years in the making!

Tickets

Magic listeners’ will be able to get their hands on tickets this Thursday (March 22nd) from 9am and that will be 24 hours before they go on general sale.

Check back on this page on Thursday for details of how to book them.

Tickets will cost £48.50

Rick Astley, Jason Donovan, Bananarama and the other acts who made the Stock, Aitken and Waterman songwriting team one of the most successful pop production outfits of all time are to join forces for a one-off gig in Hyde Park in London. Titled "Hit Factory Live", the show on 11 July is being billed as a celebration of the SAW team, consisting of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, and of PWL records.

In the 1980s and 1990s, SAW's acts enjoyed ubiquitous success, scoring more than 100 UK top 40 hits, selling 40m records and earning an estimated £60m. The Guardian once retitled the trio "Schlock, Aimless and Waterdown".

Pete Waterman said: "I've been saying no for years to a Hit Factory concert but now, 25 years on, the timing feels right. It's time to celebrate the hit single and we have a tremendous lineup of our classic artists confirmed to play … it's set to be the biggest and best ever celebration of SAW and PWL!"

Headlining the bill will be Steps, who recently reformed and embark on a 20-date UK arena tour next month. The band post-date the SAW era but were signed to Waterman's label PWL and mined the same sound.

Other acts scheduled to perform include Pepsi & Shirlie, Sinitta, Princess, Hazell Dean, Sonia, Sybil, 2 Unlimited, Lonnie Gordon and Brother Beyond, as well as Dead or Alive – the act who gave SAW their first No 1 in March 1985 with You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).

One artist not on the bill at present is Kylie Minogue, the former soap star whose recording career began with an appointment at SAW's south London HQ. But Waterman has promised further surprises and the show's promoters have mentioned "a very special duet", prompting speculation that Minogue will be reunited on stage with her ex-boyfriend Jason Donovan. I hope to be involved somehow, fingers crossed!

Bring it on!
